iPhone 12 Pro and 12 Pro Max Performance

iPhone 12 Pro and 12 Pro Max: Display

Moving to the display, which is one of the crucial elements on a device, withthe iPhone 12 Pro, you get a 6.1-inch display, while the Max comes in at aneven bigger 6.7-inch screen. In comparison to the previous Pro and Pro Maxmodels — 5.8-inch (iPhone 12 Pro) and 6.5-inch (iPhone 12 Pro Max) — the newerofferings come with slightly bigger displays. Both devices use the SuperRetina XDR display technology and offer up to 1200 nits of peak brightnessalong with HDR support.

iPhone 12 Pro and 12 Pro Max: Performance

In terms of performance, the 12 Pro and 12 Pro Max run on the A14 Bionic chip, which is the latest piece of silicon from Apple. It builds upon the 5nmprocess, and according to the company, offers up to 50 percent better CPU andGPU performance than some of the other smartphone chipsets. To run you throughspecs, the A14 features 16-core Neural Engine, which claims up to an 80percent increase in ML performance by offering close to 11 trillion operationsper second.Moving from the processor to the other major highlight of the iPhone 12series, 5G connectivity, the new phones come with support for millimeter-wavesthat promise up to 4Gbps of speeds. The support for faster connectivity allowsfor better download and upload speeds, as well as improves the cellularperformance of other apps and services.

iPhone 12 Pro and 12 Pro Max: Camera

In addition to offering faster performance, the A14 Bionic chip also aims toimprove the image quality as well as the computational photography prowess onthe newer iPhones with a new ISP. Talking about the hardware, both models comewith a triple camera setup on the rear alongside a LiDAR scanner and an LEDflash, housed within a square camera module. All three sensors: wide, ultra-wide, and telephoto, come with 12MP resolution. However, there are a few subtle changes in the specifications of these sensorson both models. To begin with, the 12 Pro and 12 Pro Max feature an ultra-widesensor with the same aperture size: f/2.4, and also have the same wide-anglelens with an f/1.6 aperture. However, it is the telephoto lens that is ofdifferent sizes on the two models. With the 12 Pro, you get an f/2.0 telephotolens, while the Max gets a narrower f/2.2 aperture size lens.Similarly, moving to the other aspects, the 12 Pro Max gets up to 2.5x opticalzoom, compared to 2x on the Pro, and up to 12x digital zoom, as opposed toonly 10x on the other model. Now, on to LiDAR, which first featured on the iPad Pro, but is something thatis entirely new to the iPhones, the latest 12 Pro iPhone models get the LiDARscanner within the camera module. Using LiDAR, these iPhones can bettermeasure the distance between objects and allow for an improved AR experience. Moreover, Apple suggests that the sensor also improves the autofocus by 6x inlow-light scenes to offer more accurate photos and videos. Needless to say, ithelps improve portrait performance with a more pronounced bokeh — especiallyat night. As for other specifications, both models get support for SmartHDR 3, nightmode portraits, and a new ProRAW feature, which is slated to arrive later thisyear. In a nutshell, ProRaw combines Apple’s multi-frame image processing andcomputational photography prowess with the versatility of the RAW format.Lastly, the iPhone 12 Pro and Pro Max get a new wireless charging solution, called MagSafe, which offers magnetically-charged accessories. Basically, itemploys an array of magnets around the wireless charging coil on the back ofthe iPhone to offer a more convenient charging experience.

Best camera phone: Apple iPhone 12 Pro Max

Andrew Martonik/Digital TrendsWhy should you buy this? Apple’s iPhone 12 Pro Max is a stunningly effectiveall-rounder with the best lowlight performance we’ve ever seen.Who’s it for? Anyone who wants the best camera performance and an exceptionalphone, and isn’t fussy about their operating system. Why we picked the iPhone 12 Pro Max:Glancing at the spec sheet, it’s not immediately obvious why the iPhone 12 ProMax should be such a solid performer. In a world of 108-megapixel lenses and10x periscope zooms, three 12MP lenses seem underpowered — but it’s anythingbut. The iPhone 12 Pro Max marks the first time the iPhone Pro line has beensplit, as the 12 Pro Max has a slightly different camera set-up to the iPhone12 Pro, and key to that is an enlarged sensor. The main 12MP sensor is 47%larger than the smaller iPhone’s sensor, and that larger sensor has a hugeimpact. It lets in more light, which means a boost in lowlight and Night Modephotography. It also allows for a more effective natural “bokeh” backgroundblur. The lens is also physically stabilized, unlike the digital optical imagestabilization (OIS) more common in smartphones. The result is a camera that’seffective in any circumstance, with less noise and blur than competitors andunrivaled colors and contrast to boot. The ultrawide camera is still excellent, and the 2.5x optical zoom isn’t thematch of the periscope zooms we’ve been seeing recently — but it’s still agood performer for what it is. The 12MP selfie lens around the front is alsojust as good as we’ve come to expect from Apple. The iPhone 12 Pro Max alsosports good video capabilities too, with Apple making a lot of the DolbyVision HDR video in the iPhone 12 range’s announcement. But the iPhone isn’t just about its camera — it’s a masterclass in other areastoo. The design is sublime. Apple has taken the chance to refresh its iPhonerange again, and has done so this time by replacing curved edges with anangular, slab-like design that’s reminiscent of older iPhones. It’s a breathof fresh air, and most welcome. However, being a large phone, the 12 Pro Maxis certainly big and heavy, so it might not be the phone for you if you havesmall hands. That increased weight and size does mean it comes with a larger display, andthis is likely to be one of your main reasons for springing for such a largephone. The 6.7-inch display is bright, crisp, and readable in any lightingconditions. The notch is still there, but it’s easy enough to get used to, andyou’re likely to forgive it that in exchange for such an utterly gorgeousscreen. The only real downside is the 60Hz refresh rate. Higher refresh ratesof 90 or even 120Hz are increasingly common in Android flagships, and it’s sadto see it missing from such a prominent brand.Specs-wise, it’s another strong performer. The A14 Bionic processor is strongenough to handle anything you throw at it for years to come, and options for128, 256, and 512GB of storage means you’re not going to lack in space forimages and videos. You’ll get well over a day’s use from a full charge, evenon high use, so it’s unlikely to conk out during your photography sessions. Italso comes with 5G, which is important for future-proofing as 5G rolls out.Sure it’s expensive, and $1,099 is a lot of money to spend on a phone. Butwith one of the best all-around cameras, a stunning design and display, and avery strong all-day battery, the iPhone 12 Pro Max is our pick for the bestcamera phone you can buy right now. But it’s not the only smartphone with anexcellent camera, and there are several options below if you’re not a fan ofiOS, or just want to spend less money.Read our full iPhone 12 Pro Max review

iPhone 12 Pro vs iPhone 12 Pro Max: Cameras

(Image credit: Future)The iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max both offer triple rear cameras alongwith Apple’s computational photography upgrades, including Night Modeportraits and Smart HDR 3 for better photos in tricky lighting. Plus, bothphones record Dolby Vision video in 4K for stunningly colorful footage. But there are some notable camera differences here. The iPhone 12 Pro Maxbenefits from a larger main wide camera sensor, which lets in more light, andthe larger iPhone also offers a slightly more powerful zoom than the iPhone 12Pro.Let’s start with the zoom on both phones, The telephoto lens on the iPhone 12Pro has an optical zoom of 2x and a digital zoom of 10x. However, the iPhone12 Pro Max delivers a 2.5x optical zoom and 12x digital zoom.As you can see in this shot of harvest decorations, the iPhone 12 Pro Max getsyou closer to your subject than the iPhone 12 Pro. It’s not a dramaticdifference, but it’s still a welcome upgrade.I also challenged both phones in low light with this close-up of a Christmastree. The iPhone 12 Pro Max did a slightly better job capturing the goldornament on the left, as you can see that it’s slightly sharper and more infocus. Same thing goes for the icicle in the center.I took this next photo of a holiday sign in near darkness with Night modeengaged on both phones. While the iPhone 12 Pro shot is fairly bright, theiPhone 12 Pro Max image delivers much better texture and detail in the fabricon the dresser and in the flecks of paint on the sign. The words are in betterfocus, too.

Performance – The iPhone 12 Pro is currently unmatched for speed

Powering the entire iPhone 12 line right from the Mini to the Max is the A14Bionic chipset. This is Apple’s most efficient silicone yet, with a 5nmprocess and a vastly improved neural engine for AI. There’s also a 5G modeminside, giving you access to the fast data network if you’re in a supportedarea (and have the right network deal). Many bands of 5G are supported and theUS version of the device has an extra antenna on the side for mmWave UWBconnectivity. We don’t have this yet in the UK, so it’s not a loss that it’smissing.5G was the buzzword during the 12 Pro’s launch event and it is being pushedheavily by carriers as a revolution in how you use your phone. They’llprobably be right in a few years when the service is far more widespread, butas of now I think the noticeable difference for most is minimal. I live in anarea where 5G is available if I walk a bit down the street and while its niceto see that 5G logo pop up, the actual download speeds on Three are barelyhigher than 4G and actually a lot less than an EE 4G SIM I used to compare. In a few years when 5G is far more widespread and we’re out again attendinggigs and back in big stadiums and festivals then the benefits will likely be alot more obvious. For now though, it’s far from a must.Interestingly, Apple has a Smart 5G feature enabled by default that switchesyou back down to 4G if it judges you don’t really need the benefits of thefaster network. This seems to be a good way to juggle battery life and fasterspeeds, only giving you the full power of 5G when you’re downloadingsomething. The iPhone 12 Pro is one of the fastest phones around – if not the fastest. Ihaven’t noticed any lag or slowdown during my time with the phone and save fora few iOS 14 bugs the experience has been fluid and fantastic. In thesynthetic Geekbench 5 benchmark app – which should give a decent overall viewof performance – the phone scores 1597 in single-core and 3968 in multi-core.This is a seriously high score on both counts.Games run like a dream and there’s enough good stuff on Apple Arcade to makethis a great little portable gaming machine. Especially when you connect up acontroller. The 12 Pro also benefits from more RAM than the iPhone 12 (6GB as opposed to4GB) and while it’s hard to spot the benefit it should keep the phone fastover a number of years. You’ve also got base storage of 128GB (alongside 256GBand 512GB variants) available – that’s double the iPhone 12. These two reasonsmight make the upgrade worth it for some.Audio from the speakers is very good, call quality is strong and there’s Wi-Fi6 support if you have the right router.

iPhone 12 Pro

Bottom line: The iPhone 12 Pro is easily one of the best phones of 2020, butit may not be enough of an improvement over the iPhone 12 to justify itsadditional $170 price tag.We may earn a commission for purchases using our links. Learn more.iPhone 12 vs. iPhone 12 Pro: Which Should You Buy?It may have arrived later in the year than usual, but Apple has finallyunveiled the iPhone 12. The new smartphone is arguably the biggest revamp tothe series since 2017’s iPhone X, having introduced a sharp, flat-edgeddesign, 5G support, and the powerful A14 Bionic processor. However, the iPhone12 itself wasn’t the only new smartphone Apple revealed on October 13, as italso announced the iPhone 12 Mini, the iPhone 12 Pro, and the iPhone 12 ProMax.Of these four models, the iPhone 12 and the iPhone 12 Pro are superficiallythe most alike. They both feature a beautiful 6.1-inch display and almost-identical dimensions, making them very hard to distinguish at first glance. However, there are a number of important differences between the two models, which we take a closer look at in this article. We compare the two smartphonesacross a number of categories to see which one is the best new iPhone for you— and the better device overall.

Overall winner: iPhone 12 Pro

While their core features are pretty much the same, the iPhone 12 Pro winsthis head-to-head by virtue of superior performance and a more versatilecamera. Its battery life is also basically just as good as the iPhone 12‘s,despite it being a bigger phone.Having said that, the $200 price difference is quite big, and not everyonewill notice the fact the iPhone 12 has 4GB of RAM compared to 6GB. The lack ofa telephoto lens may also not be missed by those who aren’t much interested inzoomed photos, especially when the iPhone 12’s camera is already great as itis. As such, the iPhone 12 will prove a great buy for anyone who wants a top-of-the-line smartphone that doesn’t make such a big hole in your wallet.

The iPhone 12 Pro camera works better with lidar

Time-of-flight cameras on smartphones tend to be used to improve focusaccuracy and speed, and the iPhone 12 Pro does the same. Apple promises betterlow-light focus, up to six times faster in low-light conditions. The lidardepth-sensing is also used to improve night portrait mode effects. So far, itmakes an impact: read our review of the iPhone 12 Pro Max for more.Better focus is a plus, and there’s also a chance the iPhone 12 Pro could addmore 3D photo data to images, too. Although that element hasn’t been laid outyet, Apple’s front-facing, depth-sensing TrueDepth camera has been used in asimilar way with apps, and third-party developers could dive in and developsome wild ideas. It’s already happening.

iPhone 12 Pro kicks glass.

Just when you thought iPhone couldn’t get any tougher, Apple introducesCeramic Shield – an all-new material that delivers 4x better drop performancecompared with the previous iPhone generation. If that wasn’t enough to help you sleep at night, iPhone 12 Pro also offerseven more durability when it comes to dust and water. It comes IP68 certified, meaning it’s dust, water and splash proof, and can be submerged in water up to6 meters for a total of 30 minutes.

iPhone 12 and 12 Pro are the fastest phones

The cameras aren’t the only thing that the A14 Bionic chip improves. It’sfast, but it’s hard to see the increased speed over the A13 chip, which isstill peppy. The A14 chip is as much about power now as it is about future-proofing your phone so it can handle iOS 17 in a few years. In performance benchmark tests, the iPhone 12 and 12 Pro recorded the highestscores of any phones we’ve ever tested. See the results below.

The iPhone 12 Pro has a slightly brighter display than the 12

Apple has improved the display on the non-Pro models this year, ditching LCDin favour of OLED across the board. That means whichever iPhone 12 you plumpfor, it will display superior colours, perfect blacks and more vivid colours. Both the iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro should offer superior colour reproductionand they also boast the XDR branding. The iPhone 12 has a far sharperresolution than the iPhone 11 and it now matches the Pro when it comes topixel count. There’s HDR support across the board, too, with a peak brightness of 1200nits. The only notable difference between these two displays is that theiPhone 12 Pro can get slightly brighter, by about 200 nits, in regular use.Not that you’ll notice a huge amount of difference unless you have both phonesnext to each other – although the marginally brighter screen does make whiterbackgrounds look a little less grey.Related: iPhone 12 vs iPhone 11

Best overall smartphone: Apple iPhone 12 Pro

Why you should buy this: It’s a complete package, with excellent hardware, great cameras, and consistent software.Who it’s for: Those who prefer iPhones, and will pay to step up to the nextlevel above the base iPhone 12.Why we picked the iPhone 12 Pro:Apple’s iPhone lineup keeps expanding, but the best option in the group is theiPhone 12 Pro — and that makes it the best overall smartphone you can buytoday. A fresh angular design for the 12 series is taken to the next levelwith a steel frame and excellent finishes, in some subtle but beautifulcolors. It’s punctuated by a great display, now with smaller bezels, that’sgreat in all conditions — even though it doesn’t have a 120 Hz refresh ratelike the Android competition. The iPhone 12 Pro also has Apple’s best-ever camera system, focusing onimprovements in low-light performance. The main camera lets in dramaticallymore light, and the results show it: Photos are brighter and crisper thanbefore. The new A14 Bionic chip lets all cameras use Night Mode now, and usingthe Pro-only LiDAR camera you can take Portrait Mode shots with Night Mode. The rest rounds out exactly as you’d expect. The specs can run iOS 14 withouta hiccup no matter what you throw at it, and it’s easily prepared for the nextthree major iOS updates too. Battery life isn’t quite the standout feature ithas been in years past, but the 12 Pro easily gets you through a day of heavyusage. And that even includes using 5G, which is supported on every carrier.Of course, there are always caveats here, with the fact that the iPhone 12 isless expensive for the same core experience, and the 12 Pro Max offers a hugebattery and improved camera quality. But they also come with their owncompromises — and that makes the iPhone 12 Pro still the clear choice for awider range of people.Apple iPhone 12 Pro review

iPhone 11 vs iPhone 11 Pro Battery life and charging

iPhone 11 vs iPhone 11 Pro – Battery life and charging

Apple has improved the battery life across all models this year, however thebiggest benefits sits with the Pro models. If you pick up the iPhone 11 you’ll likely get around an hour of extra batterylife, whereas the Pro versions pack much more than that. Gauging the actualimprovement is tough, but the 11 Pro Max is a phone that’ll comfortably lastmost people well into a second day of use. Both phones also support faster charging, however you’ll have to pay extra totake advantage of this with the iPhone 11. Both the iPhone 11 Pro and 11 Procome with an 18w USB-C charger along with a USB-C to Lightning cable. TheiPhone 11 is boxed with the same 5w charger as every previous iPhone.Wireless charging is available across all models. There are two cameras on the back of the iPhone 11

iPhone 12 vs. iPhone 12 Pro: Battery life

The iPhone 12 models have some slight differences in terms of rated batterylife, but all of them should get you through most of the day. The iPhone 12mini is rated for up to 10 hours of video streaming, while the iPhone 12 andiPhone 12 Pro is expected to last 11 hours. The iPhone 12 Pro Max should getyou the best endurance of the bunch, rated for up to 12 hours of streaming. On our web surfing battery test, the iPhone 12 mini lasted a relatively short7 hours and 28 minutes over 5G, and the iPhone 12 had a longer runtime of 8hours and 25 minutes. The iPhone 12 Pro lasted 9:06, while the iPhone 12 ProMax endured the longest at 10:53.

Apple has configured 5G so it is used when you need it. So, if you’redownloading a big file, it’ll look for 5G so it’s a fast process, but ifyou’re doing something like watching that downloaded file, and have no needfor a fast data connection, it’ll save battery by settling for 4G. The batterylife is around the same as the iPhone 11 which, by the way, was a massiveupgrade from just about any iPhone that had come before it.Apple iPhone 12 with MagSafe Duo charger, coming soon. iPhone 12 vs. iPhone 12 Pro: battery life and charging

You may be wondering which phone lasts longer on the charge. According toresults from the Laptop Mag battery test (continuous surfing over a cellularnetwork at 150 nits of brightness), the iPhone 12 takes the crown with 8 hoursand 24 minutes. The iPhone 12 Pro, lasting 8 hours and 15 minutes, ran out ofjuice nine minutes before the iPhone 12, which isn’t a significant margin.iPhone 12 Pro MagSafe (Image credit: Future)Neither the iPhone 12 nor the iPhone 12 Pro come with power bricks in theirboxes (boo!), so you’ll need a USB-C power adapter to use the USB-C-to-lightning charging cable, which ships with the iPhone 12 line. You’ll need thesame power adapter for the MagSafe wireless charging pad (sold separately);it, too, does not come with a power brick. We used a 20W power brick and the MagSafe charging pad to power up the iPhone12 smartphones. The base model charged to 16% after 15 minutes and 31% after30 minutes. The iPhone 12 Pro charged to 12% after 15 minutes and 29% after 30minutes.Winner: iPhone 12

iPhone 12 and 12 Pro battery life and processing speeds

The three iPhone 12 models are equipped with Apple’s A14 Bionic chip. Wehaven’t tested the iPhone 12 Pro Max yet, but we did test the iPhone 12 and 12Pro. Both netted comparable scores on benchmark tests and actually scored thehighest numbers on any phone we’ve ever tested. We expect the iPhone 12 ProMax to get similar marks and I’ll update the piece when those numbers come in.

iPhone 12 Pro vs iPhone 12 Pro Max: Battery life

(Image credit: Future)Other than their sheer size, battery life is the biggest difference betweenthe iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max. The iPhone 12 Pro has a 2,815 mAhbattery, compared to 3,687 mAh battery for the iPhone 12 Pro Max.On on the Tom’s Guide battery test, which involves continuous web surfing over5G at 150 nits of screen brightness, the iPhone 12 Pro lasted 9 hours and 6minutes. The iPhone 12 Pro Max lasted a much longer 10:53.The phones on our best phone battery life list all last over 11 hours, butkeep in mind that many of those handsets are 4G-only. 5G uses up more power. Both the iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro Max ship without a charger. You’ll needto supply your own 20W ($19) charger if you want fast charging to 50% in 30minutes. The magnetic MagSafe charger is one of the best wireless chargers yetbecause it’s so easy to use, but its 15W charging speed is slower than wiredcharging. We would generally avoid the Apple MagSafe Duo. It’s too pricey at $129 anddoesn’t even come with a power brick. Plus, it offers only 11W charging whenpaired with Apple’s 20W charger.

iPhone 12 vs iPhone 11: Battery life

(Image credit: Tom’s Guide)Apple isn’t known for stuffing the biggest batteries possible inside itsphones. The iPhone 11 packed a 3,100 mAh battery, while the iPhone 11 Profeatured a 3,046 mAh battery. The iPhone 11 Pro Max stepped that up to a 3,969mAh battery. On our battery testing, the iPhone 11 (11 hours and 16 minutes) and iPhone 11Pro Max (11:54) both provided enough endurance to land on our best phonebattery life list. The iPhone 12 and 12 Pro, on the other hand, both come with a 2,815 mAhbattery.According to Apple the iPhone 12 has a similar battery life to the iPhone 11,despite the smaller battery. But our testing showed this wasn’t the case. Over5G the iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro lasted 8:25 and 9:06, respectively.Things were better over 4G. The iPhone 12 only lasted 10 hours and 23 minutes, while the iPhone 12 Pro lasted 11 hours and 24 minutes. The iPhone 12 mini lasted only 7:28 on 5G while the iPhone 12 Pro Max reached10:53, making it the longest lasting new iPhone.

Apple iPhone 11 Pro battery life

The ample 3,046 mAh paired with the efficient internals means the iPhone 11Pro lasts a full day, if not more. We never found ourselves in the red zone, even after some seriously heavy use.The chunkier battery claims to add 4-hours onto the battery life compared toits predecessor, we’re not so sure that’s totally accurate, but it’s not faroff.Go from 0% to 50% in about 30mins with the 18W charger and cable found in thebox. In Apple efforts to be more environmentally conscious, the iPhone 12series doesn’t come with a charger at all.Of course you’ll find better battery life on the iPhone 11 Pro Max, but thereare other features which might put people off opting for that, mostly thesize. The recent iPhone 12 Pro slender aesthetics has one drawback, and that’s the2815mAh battery, noticeably smaller than the one in the iPhone 11 Pro andApple even admits to it lasting an hour less when testing. You won’t be left frustrated with the iPhone 11 Pros battery capabilities nomatter what you put it through, and does anyone really need a phone to lastmore than a full day?

iPhone 12 Pro Max 5G and Battery

Like its siblings, the iPhone 12 Pro Max gets 5G in both Sub-6GHz and mmWaveflavors, making it at home on the networks of all the major US carriers. It’sdown to your choice of carrier and where you’re located as to whether you’llsee the speediest benefits of that, given mmWave (or “Ultra Wideband” as it’salso known) coverage is still the exception not the rule. iOS also switchesautomatically between LTE and 5G depending on your data demands, so even if itsays 5G on the status bar you might actually be using 4G instead. You could tempted to switch that setting to always-on 5G thanks to the iPhone12 Pro Max’s larger battery. Apple quotes up to 20 hours of local videoplayback, up to 12 hours of streaming video, or 80 hours of audio, the mostfor any iPhone 12 model. In practice a full day is no problem at all. Indeed getting through that andwell into the second day, without having to temper my normal use patterns, waseasily possible too. Battery life is, in short, fantastic, and topping it upis easy too thanks to the new MagSafe charger. That’s almost handy enough thatI can forgive Apple for sticking with Lightning rather than switching toUSB-C.

Apple iPhone 12 Pro battery

A smartphone should be able to see you through an entire day without needing arecharge, and on that criteria, the iPhone 12 Pro does the job. There’s a ton of Android alternatives that’ll annihilate the iPhone 12 Pro ifit comes to the battery alone, but there’s more to battery life than a spec-sheet, and we’ve found that the A14 Bionic chip does a tremendous job ofconserving battery in standby mode.Like all iPhone 12 series phones, there’s a Lightning to USB-C cable in thebox, but no power adapter, in Apple’s efforts to be more eco-conscious.Apple’s MagSafe offers port-free charging via its ring of magnets, and you canget 15w wireless charging, which is with an Apple-approved accessory, ofcourse.Be mindful that 5G will cause a real drain on the battery life, but that’ssomething that our future-self will have to deal with; plus, there’s alwaysthe option not to join 5G networks, which is one way of negating that problem.

iPhone 12 mini battery life and charging

The iPhone 12 mini has the smallest battery of all four models (2,227 mAh), assuch, its battery life performance is unsurprisingly unimpressive.iPhone 12 mini review (Image credit: Future)On the Laptop Mag battery test (continuous web surfing at 150 nits on AT&T’snetwork), the mini survived for 7 hours and 21 minutes, which trails thecategory average (9:48). The Pixel 5 (9:53), the Galaxy S20 FE (8:58) and theOnePlus 8T (9:58) all lasted longer than the mini while the iPhone 12 (8:24)and iPhone 12 Pro (8:15) lasted about an hour longer than their smallersibling. The iPhone 12 Pro Max (10:53) lasted almost four hours longer thanthe mini.Apple introduced a new way of charging the iPhone 12 mini: MagSafe. TheMagSafe wireless charging pad, sold separately, snaps on to the circularmagnets inside the mini. Using the MagSafe charger, the iPhone 12 mini chargedto 33% in 15 minutes and 60% in 30 minutes.Like the other three models, the iPhone 12 mini does not ship with a poweradapter. Apple does, however, provide a USB-C-to-lightning cable. For both theLightning cable and the MagSafe charger, you’ll need to use a USB-C poweradapter to charge the iPhone 12 mini. You can also opt for a Qi charging pad.I’m still fuming over Apple’s power-adapter banishment, but I’m sure the techgiant doesn’t give a rat’s behind about my grievances — after all, it has aloyal consumer base that will gladly bend to its whims.

iPhone 11 Pro review Battery life and charging

iPhone 11 Pro Design and Screen

The beautiful curved design of this handset is sleek and stylish, and the slimbezels mean it’s almost an infinity display. Along the top, Apple has used thetraditional notch for the front-facing camera but reduced the size slightly. This is the smallest handset in the iPhone 11 series, which should appeal toanyone who prefers their phone to be under six inches. The textured matteglass back (which is different from the iPhone 11) and stainless steel bandgive this smartphone a premium finish. Sticking with the same size screen as the iPhone XS, this device has a5.8-inch super retina XDR display. It’s a nicely sized screen that is stilllarge enough to stream videos, scroll social media or play mobile games, making it a great handset for a range of users. This is backed up by thescreen-to-body ratio of 80.4%, which certainly cannot be argued with. It comes with scratch-resistant glass and an oleophobic coating, to ensurethat the screen does not get damaged. If you want an added layer ofprotection, you can use a case or screen protector. It also holds an IP68rating, meaning it’s water-resistant to a depth of four metres for up to 30minutes. A new feature on this handset is the triple rear camera arrangement. Thehousing for these three lenses is square-shaped and sits off to one side, differentiating the iPhone from its competition. Within the housing, thelenses and LED flash are also arranged in an offset (rather than regimented)fashion.

iPhone 11 Pro Camera

The rear camera features three lenses (standard, ultra-wide and telephoto) andall of them are 12MP. These bring even more detail and depth to your images. However, we think that one of the most impressive features on the iPhone 11Pro is the brilliant night mode. On the front of this handset is a single 12MP lens, which is a step up from7MP on the iPhone XS. Plus, the video capability on this device has beenmassively upgraded. You can film some of the highest quality video in asmartphone, before taking advantage of the impressive built-in editingsoftware.

iPhone 11 vs. iPhone 11 Pros: Battery Life

The iPhone XR and XS releases introduced us to an upside-down world whereApple’s least expensive model, the iPhone XR, also had the longest-lastingbattery. Apple says the XR was the longest lasting iPhone it ever built, andthe company wasn’t kidding — it turned in a time of 11 hours, 26 minutes onour battery test, which was nearly an hour better than the iPhone XS Max’sresult.Order was restored to the universe with the iPhone 11 lineup. The iPhone 11Pro Max takes the long-lasting iPhone crown by lasting an average of 11 hoursand 54 minutes while continuously surfing the web over LTE. The iPhone 11 alsoturned in a good result of 11:16, though that’s a few minutes behind the XR’sresult. Both those iPhones landed on our list of the best phone battery lifewe’ve seen on devices tested in the last 18 months. The iPhone 11 Pro improved upon the below-average result of the iPhone XS,though at 10:24, its result was still roughly an hour behind the regulariPhone 11.The iPhone 11 Pro and 11 Pro Max charge faster out of the box. Those modelsship with an 18-watt charger. (You won’t find a charger of any type includedwith the latest iPhones.) On the iPhone 11 Max, we got the battery up to 55%after 30 minutes of charging — good, though the Note 10 Plus and OnePlus 7charge faster. The iPhone 11 supports faster charging, too, though you’ll haveto buy your own 18W adapter.

Apple iPhone 11 Pro camera

The camera upgrades are twofold. There’s the additional lens on the iPhone 11Pro which makes a huge difference, and then there’s also the computationalphotography tricks performed by the A13 Bionic chip. It’s a lethalcombination. Both the 11 Pro and 11 Pro Max benefit from a third 12MP f/2.4 ultra-widelens, which joins the main 12MP f/1.8 camera with OIS, and the 2x 12MPtelephoto lens.Image quality is magnificent. It’s vibrant and crisp, but also offers naturalcolour rendering with not over-saturation we see from rivals. All this isachieved by Apple’s smart image layering process which uses data from allthree cameras.Portrait mode is masterful and works with any object. Apple has increased theaperture of the iPhone 11 Pro’s telephoto lens to f/2.0, rather than f/2.4seen on the iPhone XS. This means more light can get to the sensor and thistranslates into an improved portrait mode, even in tricky lighting situations. You can even switch between 1x and 2x focal lengths which offers even moreversatility when shooting.Apple seems to finally have an answer to Google’s famed, Night Mode, and it’sreally compelling too. Depending on the available light, it’ll take between1-3 seconds to expose a photo, just stay as still as possible, or better, propthe iPhone 11 Pro on a stable surface. The selfie camera does the trick and Apple has upped the resolution to 12MP,which is the same found on the iPhone 12 Pro.All three cameras are capable of recording 4K video at 60fps and you can evenswitch the camera as you zoom in or out whilst shooting.Subject tracking on video recording works well too, while audio zoom isavailable to narrow into the subject making the sound.

iPhone 11 Pro review: Battery life and charging

Because it’s a smaller phone, I didn’t expect the iPhone 11 Pro to outlast theiPhone 11 or the iPhone 11 Pro Max, but it performed well given its size. Thephone lasted an average of 10 hours and 24 minutes on the Tom’s Guide batterytest, which involves continuous web surfing over 4G LTE on 150 nits of screenbrightness.(Image credit: Tom’s Guide)By comparison, the iPhone 11 lasted an average of 11:16 on our test, with theiPhone 11 Pro Max enduring for a whopping 11:54.In the iPhone 11 Pro vs. Samsung’s S10 face-off, the Galaxy S10’s runtime of10:19 is similar to the iPhone 11, but the Galaxy S10 Plus lasted a muchlonger 12:35. Interestingly, the Galaxy Note 10 endured for just 9:25, whilethe Note 10 Plus hit 11:09 on average. The OnePlus 7 Pro eked out only 9:31.I’m glad that Apple has finally bundled a fast charger with an iPhone. TheiPhone 11 Pro ships with an 18-watt charger that got to 55% juice in only 30minutes. That’s great, and outpaces the Note 10’s 25-watt charger (47% in 30minutes). However, the OnePlus 7 Pro hit 60% with its 40-watt charger in thesame time frame.

iPhone 11 review: Battery life

The iPhone 11 offers very good endurance. On the Tom’s Guide Battery Test, which involves continuous web surfing over 4G at 150 nits of screenbrightness, the iPhone 11’s battery lasted an average of 11 hours and 16minutes. You can see how the iPhone lineup fared overall in our iPhone 11battery life guide.(Image credit: Tom’s Guide)By comparison, the Galaxy S10 hit 10:35 and the Galaxy S10 Plus lasted 12:35.The OnePlus 7 Pro was much further behind with just 9:31. The iPhone 11 ProMax lasted a bit longer than the iPhone 11 with an average time of 11:54, butthe smaller iPhone 11 Pro lasted an average of 10:24.Unfortunately, while you can fast charge the iPhone 11, you don’t get a fastcharger in the box like you now do with the iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 ProMax. Those higher-end phones come with an 18-watt charger. So if you want tojuice up to 50% in about 30 minutes, you’ll have to pay $25 for a 18-wattcharger plus another $19 for a USB-C to Lightning cable. Boo.

iPhone 12 Pro review: Battery life

* The iPhone 12 Pro battery life is 2.5 hours shorter over 5G than 4G * Smart Data mode can help save powerThe iPhone 12 Pro includes a 2,815 mAh battery, which is smaller than the3,046 mAh battery in the iPhone 11 Pro. Overall, we saw pretty good batterylife in day-to-day use, but 5G can take a serious toll.On the Tom’s Guide battery test, which involves surfing the web at 150 nits ofscreen brightness over cellular, the iPhone 12 Pro lasted 9 hours and 6minutes on T-Mobile’s 5G network. The similarly priced Galaxy Note 20 lasted 9hours and 38 minutes over AT&T’s 5G network.(Image credit: Future)When we switched over to 4G, the iPhone 12 Pro lasted a much longer 11 hoursand 24 minutes. The handsets on our best phone battery life list all last morethan 11 hours, but you shouldn’t have to toggle between 5G and 4G to getthere. By comparison, the iPhone 11 Pro lasted 10:24 over 4G, but that had asmaller 5.8-inch display and (presumably) a smaller battery. We have a more in-depth iPhone 12 Pro battery life comparison with the iPhone12 and other Android phones if you want to check it out.The iPhone 12 Pro can help you save battery life when you’re not surfing theweb. A Smart Data mode can toggle switch between 5G and 4G automatically undercertain conditions, such as when you’re streaming music with the screen turnedoff.

iPhone 11 vs iPhone 11 Pro – Specs and Camera

While these new iPhones don’t look too much different from their predecessorsin terms of design, there’s a lot of differences inside. All three are poweredby Apple’s brand-new A13 chip, come with iOS 13 installed and boast loads ofimprovements to the cameras. There’s also 4GB RAM (that’s according to theGeekbench benchmarking app, anyway) across all models. The A13 chipset is the next-generation of Apple’s silicone and it providesabsolutely fantastic performance across all Apple’s 2019 iPhones. There’s noobvious difference in terms of speed and graphical power between the iPhone 11and 11 Pro though, so don’t pick up the pricier model expecting it to rungames faster.Storage is a bit of an issue though, especially when you consider the iPhone11 Pro costs more than £1000 ($999 in the USA) and for that hefty outlay youonly get 64GB. Of course you can pay more for 256GB or 512GB. We’d suggestignoring the 64GB immediately and instead go for the 256GB option.iPhone 11 Pro (left) 5.8-inches vs iPhone 11 Pro Max (right) 6.5-inchesThe iPhone 11 also starts at 64GB and again we’d suggest paying a bit more toget either the 128GB or 256GB option. There’s no 512GB iPhone 11.Related: iPhone 11 featuresThe iPhone 11 has a dual 12-megapixel setup with a dedicated ultra wide lenssitting next to the more traditional 12-megapixel wide. That ultra wide camerais there for wider shots like landscapes and it adds an extra degree ofversatility to the pictures you can capture. On the iPhone 11 Pro model, you have the same two cameras as the 11 Pro,however there’s also a 2x telephoto lens here – if you’ve used an older iPhone‘Plus’ model or the iPhone X or XS then this will feel instantly familiar. Thethree cameras on the back of the iPhone 11 Pro consists of three 12-megapixelsensors: wide (26mm, f/1.8 OIS), ultra wide (13mm focal length, 120-degreeFOV, f/2.4 aperture) and telephoto (52mm, f/2.0, OIS).Both the iPhone 11 and iPhone 11 Pro take excellent photos and are a seriousupgrade on the iPhone XS. You can read our iPhone 11 Camera review and ouriPhone 11 Pro Camera review for in-depth looks including photo and videosamples along with comparisons.iPhone 11Like the Google Pixel 4 and the Huawei P30 Pro, both the iPhone 11 and iPhone11 Pro boast new Night Modes that impressively improve low-light photography. This mode works by stitching together a number of different snaps at variousexposures to give you a brighter overall image.Night Mode is triggered automatically when the phone detects that there’slittle natural light available and you can’t force yourself into the settingif it doesn’t appear by itself. This can be slightly irritating, but we’vefound it normally enters the mode in the right situation. What you can do ismanually alter the time it takes to capture the photo.Related: Best iPhone DealsEven though we are seeing lots of phones with 5G in the UK begin to hit themarket from the likes of Huawei, Samsung and OnePlus, Apple has decidedagainst ensuring its next-gen phones support the faster connectivity options. This has long been rumoured and comes as no real surprise, even if it issomething of a disappointment for those spending upwards of £1000/$1000 on aphone. Maybe we’ll see this hit the iPhone series next year when the 5Gnetworks across North America and Europe are switched on.Another huge difference between these new phones is their displays. The iPhone11 Pro and Pro Max both have ‘XDR displays’ (5.8-inches and 6.5-inchesrespectively) which means they can hit 1200nits of brightness and includesupport for Dolby Vision and HDR10. The iPhone 11 display seems almost meagrein comparison, with its LCD tech and 1792×828 resolution. When the two phones are side-by-side you can notice a gulf in quality betweenthe two – that is pretty obvious. The Pro models are sharper, pack inkierblacks thanks to the OLED tech, and are a lot brighter when watching HDRcontent. However, the iPhone 11 by itself and I can’t see many people beingdisappointed by the panel, but the Pro is the one to go for if you want theabsolute best display experience.

iPhone 11 vs iPhone 11 Pro – Battery life and charging

There are two cameras on the back of the iPhone 11

iPhone 12 Battery life

Apple has configured 5G so it is used when you need it. So, if you’redownloading a big file, it’ll look for 5G so it’s a fast process, but ifyou’re doing something like watching that downloaded file, and have no needfor a fast data connection, it’ll save battery by settling for 4G. The batterylife is around the same as the iPhone 11 which, by the way, was a massiveupgrade from just about any iPhone that had come before it.Apple iPhone 12 with MagSafe Duo charger, coming soon. ZAIPP Home Gym Adjustable Weight Bench

Flat vs adjustable weight bench: versatility

You might think that flat weight benches can only be used for one or twodifferent exercises: you couldn’t be further from the truth. Apart from theobvious bench press, you can also perform pecs flyes, dumbbell pullovers, iso-dumbbell holds, just to mention a few exercises. And that’s just the pecs!Dumbbell/barbell skull crushers will build monster triceps; Bulgarian splitsquats and glute bridges will tone the legs and the glutes. You can perform all the same exercises using an adjustable weight benches plusincline versions of some of the exercise, such as incline bench press, inclinepecs flyes etc. Adjustable benches are also great for working the shouldersand the back: strict presses are best done with on a bench with an uprightseat while reverse flyes and barbell rows can do wonders to your upper back.(Image credit: Getty Images)

Flat vs adjustable weight bench: durability

The longevity of weight benches depends less on their foldability and more ontheir overall quality. That said, less moving parts usually means less wearover time so in this respect, flat weight benches do enjoy a slight advantage. This advantage soon disappears when you start looking at weight benches thataren’t in the cheapest category. For example, despite being a foldable bench, we are pretty sure the ProFormCarbon Olympic Strength System will last longer than your will to workout. Ifyou are happy to shell out a little bit more than the bare minimum for aweight bench – something we wholeheartedly recommend, for a variety of reasons– you should be worried about durability too much.(Image credit: Getty Images)

Flat vs adjustable weight bench: price, availability and where to buy one

Simple flat benches can be bought for as little as $50/£50 but these probablywon’t last too long, not to mention the safety concerns. Working out on aweight bench usually requires people to hold heavy weights over their head orbody, you really don’t want to risk cheaping out on the bench and putting theintegrity of your skill in danger.Prices of decent quality branded weight benches start from around $150/£150:these will be sturdy enough for most home workout fans and will provide a goodreturn on investment in terms the amount of use you get out of the bench. However, we recommend going a little bit expensive and get a model for$200-300/£200-300: weight benches in this category represent the best valuefor money and will most likely last for long enough than just a couple ofyears. The best weight bench brands/retailers in the UK are: Mirafit, sweatband.com,Decathlon, Argos and Amazon. In the US, have a look around at Dick’s Sporting Goods, Best Buy, Walmart andAmazon US.19 Best Weight Benches For All Workouts (2020)Finding the best weight bench in the UK is a difficult task, which is why wedecided to create the ultimate list of products.
