Health and Human Performance Concentration
Students selecting the Health and Human Performance concentration will gainspecialized knowledge and skills pertaining to exercise physiology withhealthy and diseased populations as well as strength and conditioning. Theywill be employable as strength and conditioning professionals, exercisephysiologists and health and fitness professionals. Students also will beprepared to continue their education in graduate school.
Applied Health Sciences Professions Concentration
Students selecting the Applied Health Sciences Profession concentration willgain knowledge and skills related to patient care of the physically activepopulation under the direction of athletic trainers, exercise physiologists,and exercise scientists. Coursework is directly related to injury prevention,acute injury management, therapeutic interventions and rehabilitation,interprofessional practice, evidence-based practice, and professionalresponsibility. Students also will be prepared to continue their education ingraduate school for applied health science and allied health programs.
1. Biomedical Engineering
The Biomedical Engineering major allows you to get involved with as muchresearch as you would like. You have the opportunity of getting involved inresearch activities including nanoscience, cellular modeling, neuroscience,neural engineering, biomaterials engineering, and drug delivery. As aBiomedical Engineering graduate, you can then work in the pharmaceutical andbiotechnology industries, government agencies or medical, law, veterinaryschool
2. Computer Science
The Computer Science program at Louisiana Tech promotes academic growth andcareer development. Students can perform research with faculty members in theon-campus laboratories and centers. The job opportunities for computer sciencegraduates include computer programmer, software/web developer, networkadministrator, and hardware engineer.
3. Animal Science
Are you an animal lover interested in working with animals? The Animal Sciencedegree has three main tracks for students to choose from. The Equine Scienceconcentration blends scientific theory with applications laboratories to offeryou a mixed learning experience through a combination of classroom andlaboratory practice. You’ll learn with various animals on campuses such ashorse care and management, equine anatomy, physiology, behavior, andnutrition. Students in the Livestock Production concentration receivepractical experience with beef cattle, swine, goats, sheep, and horses in manybarns across the area. on Tech Farm. The Pre-Veterinary Medicine concentrationalso offers hands-on training with animals and an on-staff veterinarianinstructor.
If you’d like to study Biology at Louisiana Tech, this program allows studentsto pursue one of their three concentrations in applied biology, biologicalsciences or pre-medical illustration. The Applied Biology concentration worksfor you if you’re looking for a broad career in biology or have an interest inallied health-related areas. The Biological Sciences concentration is designedfor students who want to pursue a career in medical school, dental school oreducation. The Pre-Medical Illustration concentration combines biology withseveral areas of art. They translate the complex medical terminologies intovisual images for broad audiences, such as patients or the general public.
The BA in Psychology offers a broad curriculum for a career in major areas ofpsychology. The program is incredibly flexible to give you the chance to makeyour experience as unique as possible to your goals. You also have theopportunity to choose a second major or add a minor.
6. Interdisciplinary Studies
Not sure about majoring in just one discipline? The Interdisciplinary Studiesdegree will provide you with a flexible and individualized program to fit yourinterests. You can simply design your own degree based on the majors andminors programs available on campus. Career options depend on which programsyou choose to study as they can be wide-ranging or very specific.
Interested in learning about how the human body works? Through three differentareas of study (Exercise and Health Promotion, Health and Physical Educationand Kinesiology and Health Sciences) you’ll have the opportunity to choose thearea that interests you the most and receiving an education that can offer youa career in the field. The Exercise and Health Promotion Bachelor preparestudents to work in the wellness, fitness or athletic industry. The Health andPhysical Education Bachelors is designed for students who want to be licensedas physical education teachers or in coaching. The Kinesiology and HealthSciences Bachelor will allow you to work in allied health professions andclinical exercise physiology.

This curriculum exposes students to the fundamentals ofthe discipline: genetics, cell and molecular biology, evolutionary biology,and ecology. In addition, Biological Sciences majors may take advantage ofelective courses on topics such as macromolecular structure, pathogenicbacteriology, cancer biology, infectious disease ecology, human genetics, andglobal change ecology. Students may choose to complete an option in one of thefollowing three areas: Biomedical; Ecology, Evolution, and Behavior (EEB); orBiology Education.The B.S. in Microbiology program provides majors with a more focused educationin the biology and roles of microscopic life forms present in ourenvironments. The laboratory-intensive curriculum provides knowledge in thegenetics and physiology common to all microbes and allows students to explorespecific interests with a broad range of advanced electives such as pathogenicbacteriology, immunology, environmental microbiology, food microbiology,virology, microbial forensics, and bioinformatics.Modern biology increasingly relies on knowledge, skills, and perspectivesassociated with other scientific fields, particularly chemistry, mathematics,physics and statistics. Success in biological sciences-associated careersrequires students to master the fundamentals of these cognate fields and to beable to apply these skill sets.As a scientific discipline, biology is more than simple knowledge about livingorganisms. By integrating education and research, our majors are training tobe leaders in their field who practice innovative and interdisciplinaryapproaches in biological research. By participating in undergraduate researchduring the academic year, our students are discovering through hands-onexperience what it means to Invent the Future. Our majors are stronglyencouraged to explore internships and research opportunities on campus andelsewhere during the summer.The majority of our graduates continue on to advanced studies in the healthprofessions or in various branches of the biological sciences. Graduatespursue professional degrees in medicine, dentistry, veterinary medicine,pharmacy, and nursing, or M.S. or Ph.D. degrees in ecology, environmentalbiology, microbiology, botany, zoology, cell biology, molecular biology, andbiomedical sciences. Students interested in entering the workforce areprovided the core background for opportunities in biotechnology, food science,bioinformatics, bio-business, and health-related industries.
Students who satisfactorily complete the undergraduate curriculum inbiological sciences or microbiology may pursue advanced studies leading to theM.S. or Ph.D. in various branches of the biological sciences. Those interestedin teaching science are prepared to pursue the M.A.Ed.
Preparation for Medicine
The training afforded by the first three years (approximately 96 hours) meetsthe pre-medical training requirements of medical colleges that accept studentswith only three years of undergraduate work. It is strongly recommended,however, that all students complete a B.S. before entering medical school.
