Apple has improved the battery life across all models this year, however thebiggest benefits sits with the Pro models. If you pick up the iPhone 11 you’ll likely get around an hour of extra batterylife, whereas the Pro versions pack much more than that. Gauging the actualimprovement is tough, but the 11 Pro Max is a phone that’ll comfortably lastmost people well into a second day of use. Both phones also support faster charging, however you’ll have to pay extra totake advantage of this with the iPhone 11. Both the iPhone 11 Pro and 11 Procome with an 18w USB-C charger along with a USB-C to Lightning cable. TheiPhone 11 is boxed with the same 5w charger as every previous iPhone.Wireless charging is available across all models. There are two cameras on the back of the iPhone 11

The iPhone 12mini is rated for up to 10 hours of video streaming, while the iPhone 12 andiPhone 12 Pro is expected to last 11 hours. The iPhone 12 Pro Max should getyou the best endurance of the bunch, rated for up to 12 hours of streaming. On our web surfing battery test, the iPhone 12 mini lasted a relatively short7 hours and 28 minutes over 5G, and the iPhone 12 had a longer runtime of 8hours and 25 minutes. The iPhone 12 Pro lasted 9:06, while the iPhone 12 ProMax endured the longest at 10:53.

Apple has configured 5G so it is used when you need it. So, if you’redownloading a big file, it’ll look for 5G so it’s a fast process, but ifyou’re doing something like watching that downloaded file, and have no needfor a fast data connection, it’ll save battery by settling for 4G. The batterylife is around the same as the iPhone 11 which, by the way, was a massiveupgrade from just about any iPhone that had come before it.Apple iPhone 12 with MagSafe Duo charger, coming soon. It also charges theApple Watch.Apple

iPhone 12 vs. iPhone 12 Pro: battery life and charging

You may be wondering which phone lasts longer on the charge. According toresults from the Laptop Mag battery test (continuous surfing over a cellularnetwork at 150 nits of brightness), the iPhone 12 takes the crown with 8 hoursand 24 minutes. The iPhone 12 Pro, lasting 8 hours and 15 minutes, ran out ofjuice nine minutes before the iPhone 12, which isn’t a significant margin.iPhone 12 Pro MagSafe (Image credit: Future)Neither the iPhone 12 nor the iPhone 12 Pro come with power bricks in theirboxes (boo!), so you’ll need a USB-C power adapter to use the USB-C-to-lightning charging cable, which ships with the iPhone 12 line. You’ll need thesame power adapter for the MagSafe wireless charging pad (sold separately);it, too, does not come with a power brick. We used a 20W power brick and the MagSafe charging pad to power up the iPhone12 smartphones. The base model charged to 16% after 15 minutes and 31% after30 minutes. The iPhone 12 Pro charged to 12% after 15 minutes and 29% after 30minutes.Winner: iPhone 12

The three iPhone 12 models are equipped with Apple’s A14 Bionic chip. Wehaven’t tested the iPhone 12 Pro Max yet, but we did test the iPhone 12 and 12Pro. Both netted comparable scores on benchmark tests and actually scored thehighest numbers on any phone we’ve ever tested. We expect the iPhone 12 ProMax to get similar marks and I’ll update the piece when those numbers come in.

iPhone 12 Pro vs iPhone 12 Pro Max: Battery life

(Image credit: Future)Other than their sheer size, battery life is the biggest difference betweenthe iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max. The iPhone 12 Pro has a 2,815 mAhbattery, compared to 3,687 mAh battery for the iPhone 12 Pro Max.On on the Tom’s Guide battery test, which involves continuous web surfing over5G at 150 nits of screen brightness, the iPhone 12 Pro lasted 9 hours and 6minutes. The iPhone 12 Pro Max lasted a much longer 10:53.The phones on our best phone battery life list all last over 11 hours, butkeep in mind that many of those handsets are 4G-only. 5G uses up more power. Both the iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro Max ship without a charger. You’ll needto supply your own 20W ($19) charger if you want fast charging to 50% in 30minutes. The magnetic MagSafe charger is one of the best wireless chargers yetbecause it’s so easy to use, but its 15W charging speed is slower than wiredcharging. We would generally avoid the Apple MagSafe Duo. It’s too pricey at $129 anddoesn’t even come with a power brick. Plus, it offers only 11W charging whenpaired with Apple’s 20W charger.

iPhone 12 vs iPhone 11: Battery life

(Image credit: Tom’s Guide)Apple isn’t known for stuffing the biggest batteries possible inside itsphones. The iPhone 11 packed a 3,100 mAh battery, while the iPhone 11 Profeatured a 3,046 mAh battery. The iPhone 11 Pro Max stepped that up to a 3,969mAh battery. On our battery testing, the iPhone 11 (11 hours and 16 minutes) and iPhone 11Pro Max (11:54) both provided enough endurance to land on our best phonebattery life list. The iPhone 12 and 12 Pro, on the other hand, both come with a 2,815 mAhbattery.According to Apple the iPhone 12 has a similar battery life to the iPhone 11,despite the smaller battery. But our testing showed this wasn’t the case. Over5G the iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro lasted 8:25 and 9:06, respectively.Things were better over 4G. The iPhone 12 only lasted 10 hours and 23 minutes, while the iPhone 12 Pro lasted 11 hours and 24 minutes. The iPhone 12 mini lasted only 7:28 on 5G while the iPhone 12 Pro Max reached10:53, making it the longest lasting new iPhone.

Apple iPhone 11 Pro battery life

The ample 3,046 mAh paired with the efficient internals means the iPhone 11Pro lasts a full day, if not more. We never found ourselves in the red zone, even after some seriously heavy use.The chunkier battery claims to add 4-hours onto the battery life compared toits predecessor, we’re not so sure that’s totally accurate, but it’s not faroff.Go from 0% to 50% in about 30mins with the 18W charger and cable found in thebox. In Apple efforts to be more environmentally conscious, the iPhone 12series doesn’t come with a charger at all.Of course you’ll find better battery life on the iPhone 11 Pro Max, but thereare other features which might put people off opting for that, mostly thesize. The recent iPhone 12 Pro slender aesthetics has one drawback, and that’s the2815mAh battery, noticeably smaller than the one in the iPhone 11 Pro andApple even admits to it lasting an hour less when testing. You won’t be left frustrated with the iPhone 11 Pros battery capabilities nomatter what you put it through, and does anyone really need a phone to lastmore than a full day?

iPhone 12 Pro Max 5G and Battery

Like its siblings, the iPhone 12 Pro Max gets 5G in both Sub-6GHz and mmWaveflavors, making it at home on the networks of all the major US carriers. It’sdown to your choice of carrier and where you’re located as to whether you’llsee the speediest benefits of that, given mmWave (or “Ultra Wideband” as it’salso known) coverage is still the exception not the rule. iOS also switchesautomatically between LTE and 5G depending on your data demands, so even if itsays 5G on the status bar you might actually be using 4G instead. You could tempted to switch that setting to always-on 5G thanks to the iPhone12 Pro Max’s larger battery. Apple quotes up to 20 hours of local videoplayback, up to 12 hours of streaming video, or 80 hours of audio, the mostfor any iPhone 12 model. In practice a full day is no problem at all. Indeed getting through that andwell into the second day, without having to temper my normal use patterns, waseasily possible too. Battery life is, in short, fantastic, and topping it upis easy too thanks to the new MagSafe charger. That’s almost handy enough thatI can forgive Apple for sticking with Lightning rather than switching toUSB-C.

Apple iPhone 12 Pro battery

A smartphone should be able to see you through an entire day without needing arecharge, and on that criteria, the iPhone 12 Pro does the job. There’s a ton of Android alternatives that’ll annihilate the iPhone 12 Pro ifit comes to the battery alone, but there’s more to battery life than a spec-sheet, and we’ve found that the A14 Bionic chip does a tremendous job ofconserving battery in standby mode.Like all iPhone 12 series phones, there’s a Lightning to USB-C cable in thebox, but no power adapter, in Apple’s efforts to be more eco-conscious.Apple’s MagSafe offers port-free charging via its ring of magnets, and you canget 15w wireless charging, which is with an Apple-approved accessory, ofcourse.Be mindful that 5G will cause a real drain on the battery life, but that’ssomething that our future-self will have to deal with; plus, there’s alwaysthe option not to join 5G networks, which is one way of negating that problem.

iPhone 12 mini battery life and charging

The iPhone 12 mini has the smallest battery of all four models (2,227 mAh), assuch, its battery life performance is unsurprisingly unimpressive.iPhone 12 mini review (Image credit: Future)On the Laptop Mag battery test (continuous web surfing at 150 nits on AT&T’snetwork), the mini survived for 7 hours and 21 minutes, which trails thecategory average (9:48). The Pixel 5 (9:53), the Galaxy S20 FE (8:58) and theOnePlus 8T (9:58) all lasted longer than the mini while the iPhone 12 (8:24)and iPhone 12 Pro (8:15) lasted about an hour longer than their smallersibling. The iPhone 12 Pro Max (10:53) lasted almost four hours longer thanthe mini.Apple introduced a new way of charging the iPhone 12 mini: MagSafe. TheMagSafe wireless charging pad, sold separately, snaps on to the circularmagnets inside the mini. Using the MagSafe charger, the iPhone 12 mini chargedto 33% in 15 minutes and 60% in 30 minutes.Like the other three models, the iPhone 12 mini does not ship with a poweradapter. Apple does, however, provide a USB-C-to-lightning cable. For both theLightning cable and the MagSafe charger, you’ll need to use a USB-C poweradapter to charge the iPhone 12 mini. You can also opt for a Qi charging pad.I’m still fuming over Apple’s power-adapter banishment, but I’m sure the techgiant doesn’t give a rat’s behind about my grievances — after all, it has aloyal consumer base that will gladly bend to its whims.
