Top UK tech jobs

While tech jobs as a whole are rising in the country, certain positions andskills are more in demand than others.Software developer is the most in-demand position in tech, joining key workerroles in the top five jobs for vacancies across all sectors.Jobs requiring cloud skills have also climbed 22% since 2018, while jobsrequiring knowledge of artificial intelligence or cybersecurity have grown 44%over the same period.Notably, not all tech jobs require STEM skills. Client services, productmanagement and scrum masters have all seen significant upswing, while dataethics positions have grown 31% within a year.

Tech salaries above average

Salaries for tech jobs are also higher than for many other fields.For the whole of the UK, the average for tech positions was £39,000, comparedto the non-tech median of £27,840.This does vary significantly across the UK, however, with the lowest averagefor tech jobs being £28,500 and the highest – for jobs in London – being£55,000.However, when taking into account varying living costs, London does not rankas the best option, with Edinburgh, Birmingham, Newcastle, Belfast andSheffield all proving better when taking living costs into account.

Digital skills gap remains a concern

The top soft skills are more human-centric than last year

More task-oriented skills like ‘timemanagement’ from last year’s list are notably absent this year. While thesetask-oriented skills remain critical to success at work, this year’s resultssignal that companies are gravitating more toward talent with strong people-oriented skills.

For example, for the first time this year,blockchain not only made the list of skills we look for, but toppedit—highlighting a rapid spike in demand for these skills in 2020.Trending data also reveals that data-driven decision making skills likeanalytical reasoning (3), up one spot from last year, and business analysis(6), up ten spots from last year, are essential in today’s workforce. Ascompanies continue to collect and analyze more data than ever before, theyneed people who can help interpret and take action on that data to drivegrowth.

Topping the tech list is the need for developer/programmers, which unseatedlast year’s top job, IT project manager (now bumped to No. 3). According tothe Randstad report, “Coding and programming skills remain in high demand.Full stack developers with a range of front and back end skills are especiallysought-after.” Skills in coding Java, Python and .net are among the topspecialties employers are looking for.If programming isn’t your thing, the report shows a four-spot jump for systemadministrators, which now occupies the number two position.
