What Veterinary Technicians Do in Oregon


Veterinary Technicians, unlike Veterinary Assistants, are specifically trainedand certified to perform medical procedures on animals under the supervisionof a licensed Veterinarian.As a Certified Veterinary Technician in Oregon your tasks may include: * recording animal patients’ medical, case and treatment histories * preparing animals and equipment for surgery * assisting with surgeries and other medical procedures * collecting blood, urine or stool samples * developing radiographs * processing laboratory tests including blood and urinalyses * manage office records * providing treatment for routine problems * assisting the veterinarian with physical exams * developing x-rays and radiographs * performing anesthesia * administration of medications * recording temperature, pulse and respiration * dressing wounds * operating electrocardiographic equipment * sterilizing laboratory and surgical equipment * vaccinating animals * euthanizations when necessary * providing routine postoperative care * caring for companion animals * applying splints and other protective devices * conducting research * weighing animals * performing intravenous feedings * assisting veterinarians in surgery * maintaining treatment records * maintaining inventory of pharmaceuticals, equipment and supplies

Accredited Oregon Veterinary Technician Programs


There are 3 Veterinary Technician Schools in Oregon accredited by the AmericanVeterinary Medical Association.Coursework can include handling, care and nursing of a variety of animalsincluding cats, dogs, ferrets, rabbits, hamsters and guinea pigs. You may alsowork with dairy cattle, horses, chickens, sheep, goats, pigs, llamas, turkeys,rodents, reptiles, and birds. Depending on your career goals you may also carefor lab animals including mice, rats and guinea pigs or zoo, exhibition andexotic animals such as eagles, lizards, snakes, owls, vultures, eagles, hawksand all sorts of wildlife.The Vet Tech can also specialize in: * Animal Nutrition * Clinical Practice * Clinical Pathology * Equine Medicine * Dental Technician * Emergency and Critical Care nursing * Anesthetist * Internal Medicine * Behavior Modification * Zoological and Exotic Animal Medicine * Some graduates pursue additional education, whether a four-year veterinary technology degree, or a degree in a related area such as animal science.(List of Accredited Oregon Veterinary Technology Programs.)

Continuing Education as a Veterinary Technician


Oregon requires that you renew your Veterinary Technician certification everytwo years. To fulfill this requirement you must successfully complete 15 hoursof continuing education to the Board for every even-numbered year beginningJanuary 2008. The required hours may be satisfied with any combination of thefollowing continuing education activities:(a) Attendance at scientific workshops or seminars approved by the Board.(b) Two hours for certified veterinary technicians reading approved scientificjournals. One subscription to an approved journal is equal to one hour ofcredit.(c) Three hours for certified veterinary technicians of workshops or seminarson non-scientific subjects relating to the practice of veterinary medicinesuch as communication skills, practice management, stress management, orchemical impairment.

Please note that thescheduling of courses, program sequencing and curriculum are subject tochange.​The Veterinary Technician Associate Degree program is accredited by theAmerican Veterinary Medical Association Committee on Veterinary TechnicianEducation and Activities (AVMA CVTEA).Lehigh Carbon and Northampton Community Colleges’ Veterinary Technician National Exam (VTNE) Results:Three-year average pass rate | Total July 1, 2017 – June 30, 2020 —|— Number of first-time candidates that have taken the VTNE | 59 Three-Year Pass Percentage on VTNE | 86.4% Veterinary technicians are professionals knowledgeable in the care andhandling of animals, basic principles of normal and abnormal life processes,routine laboratory and clinical procedures, and in veterinary medical andsurgical nursing. Certified veterinary technicians are employed in veterinaryclinics serving large, small, and exotic species. In addition, graduates areemployed as veterinary assistants in pharmaceutical settings, researchlaboratories, animal feed companies, wildlife and zoo centers, and animalshelters. The job market for formally trained veterinary technicians has beengrowing, and this trend is expected to continue.Lehigh Carbon Community College, working jointly with Northampton CommunityCollege, has developed a two-year associate of applied science degree programin this field.Coursework will provide students with a foundation in the basic principles ofanimal medicine and disease, anatomy and physiology, diagnostic laboratorywork, surgical assisting, anesthesia, diagnostic radiology, pharmacology,veterinary medical nursing, laboratory and exotic animal medicine, andveterinary practice management. Students will be given the opportunity todevelop technical skills through multiple clinical experiences with liveanimals.Graduates of this program are prepared to sit for the veterinary techniciannational board examination. Students that pass the exam may obtaincertification. This program has received full accreditation from the AmericanVeterinary Medical Association.Program features: LCCC provides academic and practical experience through acombination of veterinary technology and general education core courses. Onethird of veterinary technology courses include laboratory experience includingexposure to small, large and exotic animal species. The culminating experienceof the program is a summer externship experience during which students canpractice their clinical skills at veterinary hospitals. Classes are held onNorthampton Community College (NCC) and LCCC campuses. There is a clinicalscience laboratory on NCC’s campus and a veterinary teaching facility adjacentto LCCC’s campus provided exclusively for the veterinary technician students.Classes are offered during the day and the program takes 2 full years (Fall,Spring and Summer to complete).
